As a local print shop, we hear many of the same questions from our customers concerning their print job. We've collected some of those with our answers concerning common color printing FAQs. Read on to be educated!
How big can you make this file?
This question usually refers to a small digital file or physical photo and the ability to enlarge it. We're not talking the size of the material in this case. In short, go BIG! The bigger the image is the better a printer will be able to enlarge it to your desired size.
What should my image resolution be?
The same goes for file resolution. If you want anything enlarged, the best practice to have the it at 300 dpi (dots per inch) or better.
Can I get a sample, or a hard copy proof?
Your local printer should be able to give you a sample. Be prepared to pay a little extra. The cost will vary depending on the material you would like the sample printed.
What is the best material for this application -- indoor, outdoor, mobility etc.?
Material is entirely up to the consumer. Your local printing expert should suggest what would be a good fit based on the customer's need and the printer's past experiences. The goal should be to meet the customer's wants and needs as well their budget.
What if I change my mind? (design time charging)
Everyone changes their mind from time to time. This can be overcome if the customer stops the printer before the job is started or perhaps before the proof has been approved. If not it can be reprinted without issue, but do note that there most likely will be charges assessed.
Why do the colors look different from what I had on screen?
There can be a number of reasons for colors not matching your computer screen. It could be not using proper Pantone or PMS colors or possibly not having your monitor calibrated to display true color. To insure the best outcome only use Pantone colors. Also, your screen's calibration can play an even bigger role in the color displaying correctly.
What format does the file need to be?
Sometimes asked: What files can you handle? Printers should be able to handle any file normally. Use PDFs to insure that nearly anyone will be able to view your file. At the very least PDF’s can always be viewed with Internet Explorer. Although, just because the file is in PDF format does not guarantee the file can be printed without issue. Results can vary depending on the program used to create the PDF.
When can I have that? How soon can I pick this up? Do you deliver? Is it extra for delivery?
Delivery practices vary within print shops. At Hackworth, we usually do not charge for delivery if the customer is local and the job is more than $15. Also the size of the final product is taken in to consideration. For the most part, a normal print job will have a one to two day turnaround if not sooner. If there are extenuating circumstances such as your order needs display hardware or you may have ordered material that is not normally in stock, you can expect longer turnaround times. Also, large jobs will obviously take longer.
Is there a break in price if I order more?
Normally your print provider is willing to negotiate pricing depending on quantity, size, and possibly how often you may order that product.
What do I need to get started on my project?
FILES, ideas, time, and patience.
