Well, it is official - Hackworth turned 30 on October 16th, 2021! Thirty years ago, Charlie (dad), Dorothy (mom) and Charles II (myself) sat in a mostly empty, 13,000 SF building and started calling old clients and friends to let them know we were back in business as a blueprinter. We prayed a lot and asked the Lord for guidance in our decisions but looking back I don’t think we really had a plan. As other doors shut, it became clear to us that blueprinting was what we knew and therefore blueprinting was what we were going to do. What started with blueprints, has grown to encompass a wide variety of products and services. They are too many to list but here are a few; blueprinting, copying, signage, vehicle wraps, food merchandising, graphic design, marketing, installation. In addition, we have a whole division committed to wide format equipment sales and service, including paper, toner and ink supplies. It is amazing how fast 30 years goes by and to see from where we started then, to where we are today, is nothing short of a miracle.

Here are some of the stats:

Three Companies – Hackworth, The Graphics Shop and Creative Document Imaging

Seven locations in Virginia – Chesapeake, Suffolk, Williamsburg, Richmond, Chantilly, Fairfax, Manassas Park

Employees – over 65 total employees, living and working in 5 states, as far away as Houston and Chicago

Clients – our business units now serve over 8000 customers across the continental United States

All of this would be impossible without great employees, great clients, great vendors and most importantly the Lord’s blessings.

Thank you to everyone who supported us through the past 30 years, we look forward to what the future holds and truly believe, the best is yet to come!

First and foremost, our thoughts and prayers go out to all who have been affected by the COVID-19 outbreak. The Hackworth and Graphic Shop teams are focused on the health and well being of our employees, customers and vendor partners.

Currently our Chesapeake and Suffolk locations continue to operate with normal business hours and services. However, our William and Mary location is closed until further notice. Any Peninsula clients can continue to get service by uploading work to the Chesapeake location through our website, www.gohackworth.com. We will deliver to the Peninsula daily to maintain customer continuity of service for those clients.

We have
implemented the following procedures:

We have increased the frequency of cleaning and sanitizing procedures at all offices.

We are closely monitoring the ongoing public response to this situation, assessing how any local guidelines may affect our employees and customers, in order to minimize any disruptions to customer work.

We have updated contingency plans for employee work flow to make sure we can meet all commitments to our customers.

We are practicing social distancing when possible for our drivers, sales team, service team and other staff.

Given the rapidly evolving public and government response to this situation, some impacts to our service may become unavoidable. As new advice and procedures are implemented, we will do our best to provide updates on the status of our operations via email and our website, alerting you to any potential delays or required changes to time frames or commitments for specific products, facilities, or service areas. Amid the disruption and uncertainty of this difficult time, we truly value your business, and we appreciate the trust in us that every order represents. We are committed to providing the reliable support that you expect, through this time and always, and to help keep your businesses moving forward.

On August 6, 2019 Mason Noel Hackworth, 16, of Chesapeake, Virginia passed away unexpectedly from natural causes.

Mason was the son of David and Mary Beth Hackworth, grandson of Charlie and
Dorothy Hackworth and nephew of Charles II and Wendy Hackworth.

Born in Norfolk, Virginia, Mason was a rising junior at Grassfield High
School and a member of River Oak Church.

He was a member of the National Honor Society and the International Thespian
Society.

In his spare time, Mason loved playing his guitars, singing, playing video
games and hanging out with his friends, AKA Party Bus.

Because Mason loved the arts and theater, he performed in school plays from elementary school to high school; based on his activities the Hackworth family and Ms. Laura Agudelo, Grassfield High School’s theatre teacher have established the Mason Hackworth Theatre Scholarship.

We have been asked by so many people as to how they could be of assistance, therefore the foundation of the scholarship was natural in furthering Mason’s goals, dreams and legacy.

Administered by the Southeastern Virginia Community Foundation (SEVACF), the committee composed of select family members and individuals involved with theatre at Grassfield High School will select annually a student(s) involved in the arts programs at Grassfield and award them a scholarship to further their education in memory of Mason.

The Southeastern Virginia Community Foundation is a 501©3 organization and
all donations to the Mason Hackworth Theatre Scholarship are tax deductible.

On behalf of Charlie, Dorothy and Charles, thank you for your love and
support.

Donate to the Mason Hackworth Theatre Scholarship

Donations can be made online to the foundations as follows:

Effective January 1, 2019, we are excited to announce that Hackworth Graphics & Printing will take over the Copico operation in Suffolk. Hackworth is a 27-year-old, family and locally owned business based in Chesapeake. Hackworth provides printing, design, graphics, signage and marketing services to companies throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.

Copico customers will not see any drastic or immediate changes to Copico’s production operations. Darren Schultz, former owner of Copico, will remain on staff to help with the transition. Jessica Turner, a former employee, has been hired back to handle customer service and client production needs. The current location and phone number, 757-934-2113, will remain the same. Over the next few days and weeks, clients will see a migration to the Hackworth website, billing system, email addresses and file transfer programs. Our goal is to make this a seamless transition for everyone involved.

This acquisition allows Hackworth to expand direct services into the fast growing markets of Western Tidewater such as Suffolk, Smithfield, Windsor, Isle of Wight and Franklin. In house capabilities include industrial screen printing, direct print to rigid substrate (wood, aluminum, plastic, acrylic and coroplast), fleet graphics, vehicle wraps, magnets, banners, window graphics and more.

Hackworth was voted the Hampton Roads Chamber Small Business of the Year in 2017 for the City of Chesapeake and has been recognized nationally as a Top 50 Print Shop by Wide-Format Magazine for 5 years running.

In the April 2016 edition of Wide-Format Imaging magazine, Hackworth/The Graphics Shop (TGS) were ranked the #26 wide format printing shop in the United States. The PrintingNews.com magazine listed the shop as the highest ranked in Virginia. This is the third year in a row that Hackworth has been recognized in this national publication as a Top Shop.

The wall mural project for Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore was highlighted in the feature article “It’s Crunch Time.“ The wrap team at TGS designed and printed 35 unique wall wraps for the Foodbank in 2015. The custom job resulted in over 9,000 square feet of printing.

Editorial Director Denise Gustavson stated in the article:

[pullquote align=”normal”]”The Top 60 shops had a gangbuster year in 2015, reaching an all-time high just north of $725M and showing nearly 13 percent year-over-year growth. And according to all their comments, most are looking to keep the same momentum in 2016.” [/pullquote]

Hackworth’s insight was used in “Growth Areas for 2016” sidebar of the article:

Out-of-Home and Grand-Format Signage: “Outdoor signage is a wide area but building signage, event signage, directional signage, etc. continues to grow and as the economy improves
new companies need signage and existing companies need to upgrade signage.”

Wraps: “Wraps are now more commonplace and everyone is asking about them. I tell clients they are the best ROI ever and there are so many applications and materials available.”

Graphic design students from Churchland High School visited Hackworth to learn more about real world applications in the print industry. Churchland art teacher Martin Burke brought the students to tour our facility and experience a working print shop.

President Charlie Hackworth spoke with the students about how Hackworth has evolved from a reprographics firm providing blueprints to a full-fledged digital operation that includes printing of business cards, posters, banners, signs, vehicle wraps and more.

Mr. Burke had this to say about their visit:

“Our field trip to Hackworth was AWESOME! My students and I are still talking about the large printers and wall size graphics!!! And everyone was so warm and friendly and generous with their time! Thank YOU for arranging our tour and for being so hospitable! I hope you will consider allowing my future graphic design classes to “stop by” for a visit and see all the amazing work you all are doing!”

Churchland High School is public school in the City of Portsmouth, VA. The current or “new” Churchland High School opened on Monday, January 6. 1992. This building, located at 4301 Cedar Lane, replaced former schools that had occupied several sites in Churchland since 1799. The school has seen several name changes. First known as Craney Island School, then Sycamore Hill High School, and finally in the late 1850’s as Churchland.
When Charlie and Dorothy Hackworth started their first reprographics-related business, Engineering Media, in 1974, diazo was king and digital imaging did not exist. Today their current company, Hackworth – Graphics-Printing-Technology in Chesapeake, Virginia, is a broad-based imaging business with capabilities ranging from engineering prints to full color graphics and screen printing.

The company showed off its latest technology and new building addition to about 300 customers and prospects at an open house on February 5.

“The contractors were still working on the cosmetics,” Charlie said. “But Charles [Charlie’s son], who is the vice president and general manager, wanted to have an open house just as soon as we could – there is so much new technology that’s available in the market, and we’ve always been one of the innovators in our area for new technology. We are HP and KIP dealers so we had the latest and greatest equipment that they just introduced in our production area and we were able to demonstrate those products to our clients to show them where the technology is going.”
